EW: Entertainers of The Year

WHO ARE YOUR ENTERTAINERS OF THE YEAR?

Go INSIDE for the COMPLETE list.

1. ROBERT DOWNEY JR.
This year, thanks to a series of clever choices, Downey has pulled off one of the smartest second acts in recent showbiz history. He's at the red-hot center of a humongous new action franchise, Iron Man, which has grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide since opening last May. He followed that in August by doing something few actors have dared since Jolson — blackface — in the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder, which grossed $110 million. After doing just about everything humanly possible to destroy a once-promising career — including spending the better part of a decade in courtrooms and even jail cells — he's finally fulfilling his potential. He's become a movie star. At 43.

EW: Best Photo Outtakes of the Year

Here I feature, straight from Entertainment Weekly's website, EW.com their BEST PHOTO OUTTAKES OF THE YEAR.

GUESS WHO'S IN THE LIST? GO INSIDE FOR MORE.

THE CAST OF GOSSIP GIRL
July 13, 2008 · New York City
Photograph by Frederike Helwig
The six-pack of stars (from left, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, and Jessica Szohr) who headline The CW's stylish drama proved quite the opposite of their scheming counterparts during a cover shoot at the Soho Grand Hotel for EW's Fall TV Preview. They were low-maintenance (''It was Sunday morning, and they still showed up on time,'' recalls EW photography director Lisa Berman) and chummy (no catfights over the Hervé Léger dresses to report). Still, it wasn't hard to re-create the show's signature upscale flair. Says Berman, ''We wanted it to look like they were going out for a swanky night on the town, and thankfully it doesn’t take a lot to make this group look attractive.''

My take: I love it black and white. But of course, Blake and Penn are the focus of the camera. Don't you notice how Jessica Szohr looks so in love with Chace Crawford? Other than that, Leighton Meester looks smashing.

USHER
April 13, 2008 · New York City
Photograph by Martin Schoeller
Schoeller hoped a lit match (it took about 20 tries to get this take) would ignite a new image for the R&B star, who has faced criticism for marrying his stylist. ''I wanted to show that he's not this little teenage sex symbol — that he's his own person and has a little edge,'' says the photographer. Schoeller adds that the singer was ''open to play and trying new things,'' such as letting his head be doused with half-and-half for one shot. ''I would have never thought in my wildest dreams that that would happen. But sometimes you get lucky.''
My Take: I love flaming matchstick concept. Wonder how he is doing with his former Make-up artist wife. Is it rue that she is older than him, by, 10 years (to say the most)?

THE STARS OF TWILIGHT
June 6, 2008 · Canyon Country, Calif.
Photograph by Jeff Riedel
The inspiration for this shoot, which took place in a secluded area north of L.A., came from a romance-novel book jacket. Says Riedel, ''It's a hero whisking his woman in distress away. It was a moment of passion.'' It was also a moment of slight filthiness for subjects Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. ''They were getting wet [and] standing in a pond. If they were divas, I don't think we would've been able to pull that off.''

My take: Funny how the pond became a puddle. This photo is 200x better than their cover image, to say the least. It looks like it came from a Calvin Klein ad, tres magnifique.

BEN STILLER, ROBERT DOWNEY JR., JACK BLACK
June 1, 2008 · Los Angeles
Photograph by Jake Chessum
The only thing harder than getting an A-lister to let loose at a photo shoot? Getting three of them to do it — at the same time. ''I didn't know to what extent they’d go for it,'' recalls Chessum, who conceptualized the first part of this Tropic Thunder cover shoot as a no-holds-barred brawl between the actors, complete with fake blood and black eyes. ''Then Jack Black walked in. I said, 'Jack, are you ready for this? Have you got any energy?' And he screamed, School of Rock-style, 'I got energy for daaaaays!' So at that point, I relaxed.''

BEN STILLER, ROBERT DOWNEY JR., JACK BLACK
June 1, 2008 · Los Angeles
Photographs by Jake Chessum
Later, the photographer got one-on-one time with each of the actors for portraits that he shot against the plain padded walls of a soundstage. ''They had slightly different personalities. Ben Stiller's a bit more reserved, a bit more cautious. Robert Downey kind of goes along with it. He's very calm.'' And Jack? ''It's just difficult to keep him still.''
My take: I always find spontaneity with these two pictures from Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr..the first image maes Ben Stiller look like some disfigured creature resembling a human being.

CONAN O'BRIEN
January 10, 2008 · New York City
Photograph by Justin Stephens
We all know O'Brien has a knack for making people laugh. But simians? They're a tougher crowd. It took the best efforts of the comedian, Stephens, and two trainers to get a smile out of Louie, the chimp who posed with O'Brien for EW’s Writers' Strike Survival Guide. ''It made for a very unusual dynamic,'' says Stephens. ''It's usually me trying to get something out of a celebrity. This time the celebrity and I were working together to get something out of the monkey.''

My take: I just love this man. Diggin' the strike beard.

KATY PERRY
July 16, 2008 · Columbia, Md.
Photograph by Danielle Levitt
''She has so much charisma,'' says Levitt, who shot the ultrafemme singer while she was in town with the Vans Warped Tour. ''I thought it would be fun to stick her into this simplified environment and let her personality come through without distraction.'' Perry’s look emerged just as organically. ''It's funny,'' Levitt says. ''She works with one stylist, and he basically brings a suitcase. They open it up, and it's just like playing dress-up!''
My take: The MOST HORRIFYING IMAGE OF ALL. She looks like a devil, only stupider. Busted, she is.

JOSH BROLIN
April 30, 2008 · Los Angeles
Photograph by Platon
EW's session with Brolin (seen here as our 43rd president) was more than just a photo shoot — it was a dress rehearsal. Director Oliver Stone was on hand to coach the W. star as he tried on the personality — and prosthetic nose — of his onscreen alter ego. ''He didn't just physically get into character,'' recalls Platon, who has shot real-life politicians such as Bill Clinton and Vladimir Putin. ''Everyone there witnessed George Bush, coming alive for this movie.''

SAMUEL L. JACKSON
June 6, 2008 · Los Angeles
Photograph by Michael Muller
Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. John Shaft in Shaft. Abel Turner in Lakeview Terrace. Jackson has played more than a few guys you wouldn't want to cross. But Muller says this smiling portrait is about as close to the real Jackson as you can get. ''He's the most approachable sweetheart of a guy,'' says the photographer. ''What you see on screen is not what you get in real life. Thank God.''

Boston Legal (which is its last season anyway) and 'Til Death are the scripted shows most likely to be cancelled in the new 2008-9 broadcast television season. In fact, Fox’s Do Not Disturb was the most likely to be cancelled, but Fox beat everyone to it and already cancelled the show! The other scripted shows in significant danger of being cancelled are The New Adventures of Old Christine, Lipstick Jungle, Knight Rider, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Gary Unmarried, and My Name is Earl...

How did TV By the Numbers come up with the list? They found that last season, the future of a show was nearly directly related to its adults 18-49 average viewers divided by its networks 18-49 average viewers. Many other factors may matter, but they all seemed to boil down to that one number. Last season, if a show had better than 92% of its network’s average 18-49 viewership it was pretty safe, below that level it was in danger. I’m very confident that their list will still indicate the shows most likely to be cancelled compared to those less likely to be cancelled.

Here is their list (the top is most likely to be cancelled and the bottom is least likely)

1. Do Not Disturb
2. Boston Legal
3. Til Death
4. Old Christine -- I just saw this show and I can't believe its about to be canceelled. Old Chrisitine is supremely underappreciated.
5. Lipstick Jungle
6. Knight Rider
7. Terminator
8. Gary Unmarried
9. My Name Is Earl -- I loved this show.
10. Privileged
11. Prison Break
12. The Unit
13. Cold Case
14. Ugly Betty
15. Without a Trace
16. Without a Trace
17. E.R (last season anyway)
18. Bones
19. American Dad
20. King of the Hill
21. Law & Order: SVU
22. The Mentalist
23. The Big Bang Theory
24. NCIS
25. Supernatural
26. Brothers & Sisters
27. Worst Week
28. CSI: NY
29. One Tree Hill
30. How I met Your Mother -- Oh, God, please no.
31. Fringe
32. Gossip Girl
33. Smallville
34. The Office -- I'll miss
35. Family Guy
36. The Simpsons
37. Heroes
38. Criminal Minds
39. 90210 (already renewed)
40. CSI: Miami
41. Two and a Half Men
42. House
43. Desperate Housewives
44. Grey's Anatomy

and the unscripted shows:

1. Crimetime Saturday CBS (idk what this is)
2. America's Toughest Jobs
3. Sat. Football Pregame
4. 20/20 Friday
5. Opportunity Knocks
6. Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader
7. Cops
8. Don't Forget the Lyrics
9. 48 Hours Mystery
10. America's Most Wanted
...
25. The OT (wtf is this? it's on fox)

NEW TRACK: "Human" by The Killers

A lot of radio stations premiered The Killers' Human and by nature, leaks are all over the internet. Sam's Town was brought to shambles (even I, the most earnest Killers fan have to agree) by various negative feeback from critics, but their recent album, Sawdust was good. Tranquilize was beyond amazing. Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf was, too. In this fashion, The Killers tries to continue their streak with Human. The piece is an amazing blend of "slowly building slice of sweet synthpop, complete with big fake-string build right before the final chorus".

Another 3 points for The Killers as they score a love scene for a Gossip Girl episode by the end of September. Shall we say--"Hell, Yeah!" for The Killers?

Drew Barrymore and Ed Westwick (Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl) were spotted making out while the Kings of Leon performed in the Webster Hall. Earlier reports say that Drew was with Westwick's costar, Chace Crawford. However, it was all "smokescreen" to cover up the real relationship.

Following last night’s show, Westwick, wearing leather pants and pointed shoes, accompanied Barrymore to the after-party at Bowery Electric where the pair continued their PDA. Barrymore even straddled Bass — um, we mean Westwick — in a move not dissimilar to that time Serena did it with Nate on the bar. To be honest, the whole thing kind of hurt our eyes a bit, not least because at 33, Drew is definitely the Catharine to 21-year-old Westwick’s Marcus. Needless to say, he could barely conceal his smug satisfaction all night — and left wearing the same half-smile Chuck did after he bagged Blair that fateful night in season one.

I must say, Ms. Barrymore does like her men, YOUNG. I thought she was into pathetic looking, hardly-hilarious comedians. But with Justin Long, and now Ed Westwick, this puts me in my confirmation that while Drew Barrymore goes out at night, she is out not only to party but to find the finest young ass in town.

I read this funny comment at NYmag regarding this topic, and I can't agree more:
"I know that this story is not true because when you wear leather pants and pointed shoes at the same time your body explodes." -- Worker3116

TV SNEAK PEEK: Serena Gets Her Bitch on Dan

"Consider it a suggestion." ---> Eh. When will you get your bitch on Serena? When?

Tonight was the first night I actually LIKED Nate and thought he had a personality. Chace's face when he said, "I want to be with you" to Vanessa basically made me "awww" aloud.

Bleargh I hate dan. So much.

He's supposed to be the ~good guy~ compared to everybody else, but he is so judgmental. He was in love with Serena before he even talked to her then got mad when she didn't live up to his expectations. He gets mad at her because she's rich. He gets mad at her because she has a bitchy friend. He gets mad at her because she wasn't ~honest~ about an old friend blackmailing her with a video. He gets mad at her for kissing Nate two months after he dumped her. He is such a pretentious PRICK! Even my mom agrees.

I could go on.

And also, I want the bitch in book Serena... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. TV Serena is one of the lamest characters in the show. Ugh...

GOSSIP GIRL: GG Cast Goes Back In Time

What is up with the Periodic-inspired costumes?

Is the Gossip Girl cast fed up with all the absurd labels they wear on the show that they opted to go PERIODIC?

I know many of us will disagree on this. But worry not, it's part of an episode for the new season.
{It’s a My Fair Lady reference with a Eliza Dolittle pre (Blair) & post (Serena) make-over.}

Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester go back in time as they step out on-set in period costumes in New York City on Thursday.

Blake’s costume looks way more chic and sophisticated than Leighton’s. Poor Leighton looks like a ragged Mary Poppins!

The second season of Gossip Girl starts off with a bang @ 8PM ET/PT on Monday, September 1.

The new season of Gossip Girl starts on September 1, but if you can't hold out for two more weeks, there's a little relief in sight...

Next Sunday, August 24, Henri Bendel reveals their latest Manhattan windows, designed by GG costume designer Eric Daman.  The clothes in the windows are inspired by Blair, Serena, and Jenny, ensuring that even if you can't join the girls and their evil (but oh so fun) plots at prep school, you can still do a take on their wardrobe.

You can also just run to a vintage shop and buy a few headbands and some lip gloss, which suits the show's signature pearls-and-Converse look just fine...

Leighton makes me sick to my stomach with her gorgeousness. Hehe.
And I don't recognize Jenna Fischer when she's all made up. Seriously. It took me a minute to recognize who it really was.
Sorry for the grainy look of the scans, I redid Omar Epps but I guess that's all I can give!
Can't wait for House, 90210 (hope it doesn't blow), Swingtown and Gossip Girl.
