WEEKLIES: She's Mine

"You know how when you're listening to music playing from another room? And you're singing along because it's a tune that you really love? When a door closes or a train passes so you can't hear the music anymore, but you sing along anyway... then, no matter how much time passes, when you hear the music again you're still in exact same time with it. That's what it's like."
 - On love, Music from Another Room

First in all of my Weeklies posts is this romance-tinged version. Most of the tracks are a bit old but certainly there is a track here we can relate to.

Welcome to a first of a series of music video collectives here in TBT*'s Video Shack. If you frequent this blog, you should know how out of the loop I am on the new videos coming out. It would be GREAT if you leave suggestions on any good video you think everyone should see by leaving a comment! I'd be totally down with your suggestion, just as long as it's worth sharing!

This week's Video Shack features Mayer Hawthorne's Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin', Nicki Minaj, Mount Kimbie's "Would Know" and All Summer's music video from Best Coast's Bethany Constantino, Vampire Weekend's Rostamn Batmanlij and Kid Cudi.

Mayer Hawthorne - Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'

Mayer Hawthorne can do a lot of things with that voice and retro sound of his. Take Exhibit A, from the music video. The throwback style and dancing attractive women seems like another of his typical weekends.

Three more videos! Check it out inside.

Nicki Minaj - "Your Love"

Nicki Minaj scores gets a big score for doing a 180 degree turn from her warrior-in-training drama closing the video with the dying ending. "Your Love" samples lines from Annie Lennox's "No More 'I Love You's'," so seeing some frou frou fashion statement in highly unlikely.

Mount Kimbie - "Would Know"

Mount Kimbie have released a music video for "Would Know" and it was directed by hotly tipped filmaker Tyrone Lebon. The track is taken off their debut album, Crooks & Lovers out now via Hotflush Recordings.

Best Coast, Rostam & Kid Cudi – “All Summer”

Here it is, the hot Converse-funded collab "All Summer" track featuring the between Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, Kid Cudi, and Rostam Batmanglij. Yeah the mugging of large heads whilst in the apartment might not be your way of spending the summer but these three know how to have fun at it.

Did you ever wonder who that Polo-sporting mystery blonde was who stars on the cover of chart topper Contra? The name is Kirsten Kennis and she wants all of you folks to know that she's not Vampire Weekend's biggest fan. The photo was taken in 1983 and here's the goods via TMZ:

"The model is Kirsten Kennis — who claims she took the original photo way back in 1983 — and had no idea it was being featured on the album “Contra” … until after the band began to promote it back in November. In a lawsuit, filed yesterday in L.A. County Superior Court, Kennis claims she thinks it all has to do with a “photographic release” that the band obtained from a photographer named Tod Brody. Problem is, Kennis claims the signature on the release is a forgery. Kennis blames the band for not verifying the legitimacy of the release — and is suing VW and the photog for more than $2 mil."

Credits to P4K for sharing this piece. Girl sure has some nose for money!

Last year, Converse's Three Artists, One Song got Pharrel William, Julian Casablancas and Santigold for 'My Drive Thru'. Now, it's only sensible for Converse to have the most popular artists-- Kid Cudi, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Bethany Consentino of Best Coast -- for this year's version. Will this track be a sneak peek of the upcoming Warped Tour? I sure hope so.

Converse also did some character profiles of the three artists which will be viewed as mini films. Watch it here if you know only 1/none out of 3 of them.

CAMEO ALERT! CAMEO ALERT!

I don't know about you but celebrity cameos in music videos really draw me in. Especially if the theme of the music video is way out of their element. And not gonna lie, star power really makes for a good promotion for the artist and definitely raises those album sales. Maybe this was Brandon Flower's aim for his upcoming SOLO album, with the single Crossfire featuring the svelte and daring Charlize Theron as the heroine beating the bejesus out of ninjas, or maybe not. The nunchucks, the awezum kicking-ass Theron saving the hapless Flowers, who in the end gets abducted isn't the most original formula but it works. Who could blame him when you get to work with someone like HER?

♫ Brandon Flowers – Crossfire

Below are other star cameos I relish with delight:

Jake Gyllenhall, Joe Jonas, Lil’ Jon and RZA in Vampire Weekend’s “Giving Up the Gun”

More Inside. Click here.

Moby’s “Natural Blues” featuring Christina Ricci

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Stone Temple Pilot’s “Sour Girl”

Pamela Anderson in Kanye West's "Touch the Sky"

Johnny Depp in Tom Petty's Into the Great Wide Open, Oh and Faye Dunaway (if I'm not mistaken)

Christopher Walken in Fatboy SLim's Weapon of Choice
Took me so long to look for this I keep forgetting the title haha.

And that's about a quarter of my favorite music videos with cameos. There's still that Paula Abdul one with Keanu Reeves and of course, Michael Jackson's Remember the Time but this post is long enough. Enjoy, as I did watching these videos all over again!

PS I miss old MTV.

Well lookie here. Giving Up The Gun off Vampire Weekend's recent album Contra now has a music video with cameos from RZA, Lil Jon, Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal. Ezra Koenig, lead singer of the group, had the idea of a tennis match theme for the video.

This video really contests Jamie Foxx's celebrity cameo-studded video for "Blame It." And hey, Jake Gyllenhaal stars in that too. That guy picks his roles well. So whaddaya think?

ALBUM: Vampire Weekend's CONTRA

Vampire Weekend's highly anticipated second album, Contra, is almost in everyone's ALBUM TO WATCH OUT FOR 2010. Their 1st album, filled with pan-ethnic demos, was predominantly what I've come to call preppy ennui. (J.D. Salinger and King Sunny Adé anyone?) And now, from my initial listen of their sophomore album, they still have that African pop and Western classical vibe going on. I liked Cousins and Horchata is still growing on me. Ezra Koenig gives a visual of Manhattan in White Sky and made a closing of orchestral quality, the quiet of "I Think Ur a Contra." Preview the rest of the tracks inside.

Been away from the PC in a while! ATTENTION!

You might be interested in hearing this track from two groups of artists that need more lulz and love - Vampire Weekend and Chromeo. Ok I'm sick of being sarcastic now so i'll just go out and say it, everyone has been waiting on this track to drop, and I feel it was in good reason. This track is a little bit better than most Chromeo tracks i've heard and also quite a good  Vampire Weekend track making it a winner.

Let's get the ball going, shall we?

We all know Halloween Ball is one of the events we look forward to at All Souls Eve. Whilst I am one of the person who are ambivalent with Halloween (Love or Hate?), I swear to being the apprehensive one when it comes to musical choices. Who said Halloween is was all about swanky costumes, pranks and booze? Here is my trick or treat for you guys, a whole set (read 13 + bonus tracks of my kind of playlist for this season).

Here’s to getting into the spooky swing of things with a proper balance of the right soundtrack, and a whole hell of a lot of candy!

13 and 4 other tracks... *Mwahahahaha*

1 The Smashing Pumpkins - We Only Come Out at Night

Technically, you could pick out any of The Smashing Pumpkins songs and it would be considered appropriate. The title had a feel for the nature of vampires coming out at night (because they melt during the day, duh), and to be honest with you… sometimes Billy Corgan looks a little bit ghastly. Though the song is agreeably slow, it deserved top spot for the spooky feel.

2 The Pixies - Bone Machine

The thing about The Pixies is that they have a little bit of something for everyone, but they definitely are not for everyone. This isn’t really your typical party song…unless people know the words and everyone can try to sing along with Frank Black and sorta do that college-rock head bang dance, which for some reason is perfected after a few beers. I put this song as the second spot because it’s a chance to rock out a little bit…and come on, The Pixies are awesome.

3 Metric - Monster Hospital

Though there is a repetitive line in the song, “I fought the war, but the war won”, which may bother you a bit, you'd soon forget about it once you hear enchanting Ms. Emily Haines' vocals pounding on you ears. Basically, any song that starts out with the line, “Bam shika bam shika boom boom bom” is top of it’s class in my book.

4 TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me

When you want to maintain the upbeat feel of the party, this track from one of my favorite bands, TV on the Radio, is the most fitting one. This jam, which was part of their recent album Dear Science, is probably one of their more popular songs on the mainstream scene. Let your guests jump up and down your sofa cause they should.

Download | TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me

5 Michael Jackson feat. Janet Jackson - Scream

I particularly make it a point to include Jacko in anything Halloween. It's not just the artists' physical features that make Halloween a fearsome thing to behold (Pun Intended), but just that sense of fun accompanying Michael Jackson's songs make this track a Halloween playlist essential.

Download | Michael Jackson feat. Janet Jackson - Scream

6 The Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

I would personally love to be in attendance at a party that played The Talking Heads, better yet, I would love to be friends with a person that played The Talking Heads at their party. Who knows, you might get some movie action while the song is playing.

Download | The Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

6 Sonic Youth - Halloween

Things get a bit slow here (a lot). The scene I'm kinda imagining here is everyone lounging, sort of taking in everything. Just sort of chilling out and taking in the ambiance. It’s the somewhat spoken lyrics, the at-times eerie guitar, and the random bursts of tambourine that makes this song appropriate. the title is, obviously.

Download | Sonic Youth - Halloween

7 - 8 Beck - Scarecrow

So, here is my man, Beck! Now that things are slow and people are in that cool lounge around vibe, it’s only appropriate to bring this dude in (Wonder what Beck would dress up as for Halloween?). I considered putting “Scarecrow” on my list, so hey, what the hell? This is a good song, it’ll continue the chill-laxin’ you have going on.

Download | Beck - Devil's Haircut

Download | Beck - Scarecrow

9 Gorillaz - Dracula

Please note that this is not “Dragula” by Rob Zombie because he would be featured on a completely other list titled, “Artists that you dress up as for Halloween”. But alas, this song is by the Gorillaz…the mysterious band, made up of cartoon characters, that has managed to keep it’s allure with it’s audience. This song in particular is perfect because it incorporates the seasonal inspiration, but it also caters to that lounge feeling that has developed in the playlist at some point or another. I should also note that the lyrics clearly indicate, “Everybody party time“…what more can be said about the lyrical content than that! This song is a bit out there in the best possible way and provides a good background music to an even better conversation (and of course, drinks).

Download | Gorillaz - Dracula

10 Björk - Play Dead

Björk would also probably be on my list of artists to dress up like, especially if you are talented enough to make that Swan Dress. I am blatantly inspired to include this song not just because of the title but the way eerrie sounds make goosebumps seem persistent throughout the song. It’s slow, it’s somewhat pretty, and it’s got that great Björk yell in it at multiple points in the song. Chillin' track.

Download | Bjork - Play Dead

10 Goldfrapp - Monster Love

This song is slow “.” It may even be safe to yell out a humorous “couples only” when this one comes on, but it’s a lovely song and gives a new outlook to monster lovin’!

Download | Goldfrapp - Monster Love

12 Ladytron - I'm Not Scared

This group is particularly perfect for the list. Spikes up those guests of yours that might be dozing off, an puts everyones groove for a bit of some disco and partayh.

Download | Ladytron - I'm Not Scared

13 Cat Power - Werewolf

Okay, this song is a bit sensitive so sequence is essential. The goal is not to play into the majority opinion, but rather to end the playlist with a bone-chilling song that isn’t over the top and just sort of gives your guests a parting (not dying) note.

You may want to make sure that your guests haven’t fallen asleep after chilling out to the second half of this playlist, and if they have fallen asleep then all you have to do is pump up Jacko’s “Thriller” to get them awake. Who knows, the “Thriller” dance may even look better when it’s done by people who are half-asleep.

Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (The Teenagers Remix)

Vampire Weekend's lost in the hemisphere of Radiohead and TV on the Radio. What could've happened to them? Well, as of now they've released Ottoman for the movie Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, but if they continue on releasing amazing tracks like this remix, we'd surely be tailing them for a long time. Jesus, I'm loving the Teenagers more and more each day.

Here is the rest of the list:

NEW REMIX #1 : Madonna - "Music" (Groove Armada Remix)

NEW REMIX #2 : Frank Musik - When You're Around (Boys Noize Remix)

NEW REMIX #4: The Killers - "Human" (Christian Vorbau Remix)

NEW REMIX #5 : M.I.A. - Planes Booty (Atomic Hooligan Remix)

NEW REMIX #6 : Radiohead - "Reckoner" (Diplo Remix)

NEW REMIX #7 : Get Lucky (Twelves Remix) - New Young Pony Club

It's a MGMT and Mash-up post overkill but I just can't help but share this to you guys. I got a chance to hear this Eve Massacre mash-up at am.fm.pm and I was smitten. Eve Massacre made one of this fall's sluttiest mash-up and Soulwax and Peaches get in on the mix as well. If it isn't your kind of thing, then listen to some of Vampire Weekend's song about house furniture.

NEW VAMPIRE WEEKEND TRACK: "Ottoman"

Vampire Weekend gave a favor to Kat Dennings and Michael Cera for their movie, Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, and lent it for the OST. The book was pretty good, but I'm getting sick of this whole Michael Cera obssession. He's just a kid who married his very own sister in a canceled TV show. What's more to it than that? Well, he was hilarious in Superbad, so, who am I to judge?

Anyway, here's the track. Vampire Weekends' Afro-Pop influences did them good. Real good. Download it, it's pure sweetness. The violin portion, fused with some foreign instrument I have completely no idea lends Ottoman a really catchy tune.
